How to Build the Perfect Wedding Photography Timeline (From an Orlando Wedding Photographer)

Planning your wedding day comes with so many moving pieces and your photography timeline is one of the most important. As an experienced Orlando wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-planned timeline can make the difference between a calm, enjoyable day and one that feels rushed and stressful.

In Episode 4 of my podcast, The One with Two Photographers, my colleague Jacob and I broke down exactly how couples can create a photography timeline that keeps the day flowing smoothly while still capturing all the moments that matter most.

If you’re currently planning your wedding in Central Florida, here’s what you need to know.

Why Your Wedding Photography Timeline Matters

When couples don’t leave enough time for key moments during the wedding day, it can start to feel rushed and it’s hard to keep the stress out of your photos. But if you build enough time into the timeline, that gives you some breathing room to enjoy the day instead of feeling like you’re on an 8-hour photo shoot.

As a Central Florida wedding photographer, my goal is always to help couples build timelines that feel realistic and comfortable, while still capturing all of the moments they want.

Start With Your Ceremony Time

The best way to build your wedding photography timeline is to work backward from your ceremony. This helps us determine when we should start photography coverage, where we can fit the first look (if you’re doing one) and family/wedding party portraits as well as what options we have for daylight for any requested outdoor photos.

For most couples, this is the anchor that everything else revolves around.

How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Really Need?

This is one of the most common questions we get as an Orlando wedding photographer.

While every wedding is different, most couples in Central Florida need:

  • 6 hours → very simple timelines, minimal getting ready

  • 8 hours → most popular, covers getting ready through reception highlights

  • 10+ hours → larger weddings, multiple locations, or full-day coverage

If you’re unsure, we always recommend building your ideal timeline first and then choosing coverage that actually supports your day instead of squeezing your day into a package. Since we always offer custom packages for wedding couples, we can be pretty flexible with the number of hours we spend with you. And don’t forget, you don’t ever need to worry about what everyone else does - this is your day so you get to decide what works best for you and your future spouse!

Should You Do a First Look?

This is ENTIRELY up to you. But there are some pros and cons to doing a first look if you’re on the fence.

With a first look:

  • More portraits can happen before the ceremony

  • You get more time at cocktail hour or you get to use more of the cocktail hour time for newlywed photos

Without a first look:

  • We need to do family photos and wedding party photos AND newlywed photos all after the ceremony which is usually only 45 actual minutes

  • The post-ceremony window becomes tighter

There’s no right or wrong choice but it definitely affects how we structure your timeline. Think about the size of your family and wedding party and how many variations of newlywed photos you’d like to have and balance that with whether you want to see one another before the ceremony.

Build in More Buffer Time Than You Think

If there’s one piece of advice we give every couple, it’s this: add cushion time.

Hair and makeup runs late. Transportation hits traffic. Boutonnieres disappear. Something unexpected happens at every wedding.

We typically recommend:

  • 10–15 minute buffers between major events

  • Extra time for family photos

  • A few quiet moments built into the day

These small pockets of time are what keep your wedding feeling smooth and stress-free.

Don’t Forget About Golden Hour

Golden hour, the hour leading up to sunset, is when we have the chance for those glowy magical sunset photos. As a Florida wedding photographer, we always keep an eye on sunset time when helping couples build their timeline.

A lot of times, the sunset happens during your wedding reception, so sneaking out for more newlywed photos is a conversation where we need to loop in your planner/coordinator. If this is something important to you, make sure I know and your planner knows so they can work around it! I usually like to go out for the 10 minutes right before sunset, unless your venue has a lot of really tall trees or buildings surrounding it, then we might have to go earlier.

Work With Your Photographer Early

One of the biggest mistakes we see is couples waiting too long to involve their photographer in timeline planning.

When you work with an experienced Orlando wedding photographer early in the process, we can help you:

  • Build a realistic timeline

  • Avoid common scheduling mistakes

  • Maximize your photo opportunities

  • Keep the day feeling relaxed

Timeline planning is one of the biggest ways we serve our couples long before the wedding day arrives.
